ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI to Use Right Now (October 2026)

AI Operator ·Published October 22, 2026 ·By Ivan Bunin

A founder at a wooden table studies three small plain clay assistant machines, sand, slate and sky blue, while an AI operator beside him points to one, holding a small notepad.
Verdict

Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini, as of October 22, 2026: use Claude for writing, long documents and building internal tools. Use ChatGPT for images, voice and a Microsoft Office shop. Use Gemini if your company runs on Google Workspace, and for video. One person pays about $20 a month on any of them: Claude Pro $20, ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99. A team pays $25 a seat on Claude Team or ChatGPT Business, or gets Gemini inside Google Workspace Business Standard at $14 a user. None of the three trains on business-plan data by default. We run Pareto Talent on Claude, so weigh my verdict with that in mind. Every price on this page comes from the vendors' own pages, opened October 22, 2026, and I re-check the whole page every month.

Which AI to use for each job (October 2026)

The job Use Runner-up Why, in one line
Writing in your voice: emails, posts, proposals Claude ChatGPT Skills and projects hold your style; our team's daily experience
Research with sources Tie All three ship Deep Research. Gemini's is on its free plan
Spreadsheets and data Gemini in Google Sheets; ChatGPT in Excel Claude, for one-off exports Use the AI that lives inside the spreadsheet your team already opens
Coding and building tools Claude (Claude Code) ChatGPT (Codex) Claude Code is on every paid Claude plan, with skills and scheduled tasks
Images ChatGPT Gemini Image generation is built into ChatGPT Plus; Claude lists none
Video Gemini Video generation from Google AI Plus up; Veo 3.1 on Ultra
Meetings and voice Gemini on Google Meet; ChatGPT elsewhere Gemini sits in Meet on Workspace Standard; ChatGPT has Voice and a Meetings plugin in beta
Google Workspace company Gemini, plus Claude or ChatGPT for builders You may already pay for Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Meet
Microsoft 365 company ChatGPT Claude ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Claude has a Microsoft 365 connector with write tools

Feature facts from each vendor's pricing, help and release-note pages, opened 2026-10-22 and listed under Sources. The "Use" column is my judgment from running a company on these tools, not a test result.

Every month someone asks me the same question. "Which AI should I be using right now?"

It's a fair question, because the answer moves. In the last five weeks OpenAI shipped GPT-6, Google shipped Gemini 4 Argon and Anthropic shipped three new Claude models. Most comparison pages were written once and never touched again. The top results for this search include pages from 2023.

So this page is built to be re-checked. One verdict per job, every plan and price from the vendors' own pages, the privacy defaults, and a changelog of what moved. Dated. Updated monthly.

My bias, up front. Pareto Talent runs on Claude. We're on the Claude Team plan with 12 seats, all in use, and our email and files live in Google Workspace. Our certified AI Operators are trained on all three: Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. I'll tell you where each one wins, including where Claude doesn't.

01 · The Short Answer

Which AI should you use right now?

For most founders in October 2026: Claude for writing, documents and building; ChatGPT for images, voice and Microsoft Office; Gemini if you live in Google Workspace or need video. At about $20 a month each, price doesn't decide it. Your existing software does. Pick the one that sits inside the tools your team already opens every day.

Here's the shortcut I give founders:

  • You're on Google Workspace Business Standard or higher. Start with the Gemini you already pay for. Add one Claude or ChatGPT seat for whoever builds.
  • You're a Microsoft 365 shop. Start with ChatGPT. Its Word, Excel and PowerPoint add-ins meet your team where they work.
  • You want tools built, not just answers. Start with Claude. Claude Code is included from Pro up.
  • You make a lot of images and video. Start with ChatGPT for images and Gemini for video.

That's the whole answer for 80% of readers. The rest of the page is the evidence.

02 · Price

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: plans and prices side by side

One person pays about the same on all three: $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, $19.99 for Google AI Pro. Gemini is the only one with a $4.99 tier. For teams, Claude Team and ChatGPT Business match at $25 a seat ($20 billed annually), and Gemini comes inside Google Workspace from $7 a user.

Power user Pro 100 $100, Pro 200 $200, Pro 500 $500 a month, monthly only Max: from $100 a month, 5x or 20x Pro's per-session usage Google AI Ultra: $99.99 (5x Pro) or $199.99 (20x Pro) a month
Team Business: $25 a seat, or $20 annual. Premium seats $125, or $100 annual. 2 seats minimum Team: $25 a seat, or $20 annual. Premium seats $125, or $100 annual. 2 to 150 seats Google Workspace with a 1-year commitment: Business Starter $7, Standard $14, Plus $22 a user a month
AI-only for a company Covered by Business Covered by Team Gemini Enterprise: Business edition from $21 a seat, up to 300 seats
Large company Enterprise: sales-led, price not published Enterprise: $20 a seat billed annually, plus usage at API rates, 20 seats minimum Workspace Enterprise: contact sales. Gemini Enterprise Standard and Plus from $30 a seat

Sources: OpenAI Help Center on Plus, Go, Pro tiers and Business; Claude pricing and the Claude Help Center on the Max plan; Google's Gemini subscriptions (US) and Google Workspace pricing. All opened 2026-10-22. US prices before tax. ChatGPT's own pricing page asks you to sign in, so ChatGPT figures come from OpenAI's Help Center.

Four things the table hides:

  • Annual billing. Only Claude sells a personal plan annually, at $17 a month. OpenAI says Go, Plus and Pro are monthly only. Google's consumer Gemini page lists monthly prices only.
  • Workspace changes the math. Google Workspace Business Standard at $14 a user includes Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Meet and Chat, plus the Gemini app. Business Starter at $7 includes Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app, but not in Docs or Sheets. If you already pay for Standard, your Gemini seat is already bought.
  • API credits. Claude Team includes monthly API credits, pooled up to $500, once you link a Claude Console organization. We pay for $480 of them a month and haven't linked one yet. ChatGPT Business doesn't include API usage. Google lists AI Studio as free to start, with paid tiers.
  • Limits reset differently. Claude and Gemini both describe limits that refresh every 5 hours inside a weekly cap. All three sell credits for use past the included limit.

For the Claude plans in depth, read the Claude pricing guide. For a two-way price breakdown by team size, see Claude vs ChatGPT.

03 · Value

Which AI subscription is best for the money?

For one founder, Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually is the cheapest full plan, and it includes a coding agent. Google AI Pro at $19.99 gives the most extras: 5 TB of storage, video generation and Gemini in Gmail and Docs. ChatGPT Plus at $20 gives the broadest feature set: images, voice, Deep Research and Codex.

ChatGPT Plus Claude Pro Google AI Pro
Price $20 a month, monthly only $20, or $17 billed annually $19.99 a month
Top model on the plan GPT-6, Medium and High thinking Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5; Fable 5.1 via usage credits Gemini 4 Argon
Coding agent Codex, with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex Claude Code Jules and Google Antigravity, entry limits
Images and video Image generation Not listed Images, plus video in the Gemini app (a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial)
Research Deep Research, where available Research Deep Research
Context window Not published per plan for chat; 500,000 tokens for GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex Up to 1M tokens, by model 1M tokens
Extras Voice, file analysis Annual option, connectors 5 TB storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, YouTube Premium Lite

Sources: OpenAI Help Center, What is ChatGPT Plus?, GPT-6 and other models and ChatGPT Work and Codex; Claude pricing; Gemini subscriptions and its FAQ. All opened 2026-10-22.

My rule: buy the $20 plan of the one that matches your daily software. Move up a tier only after you've hit the limit three weeks in a row. Most founders who think they need $200 a month need a better setup, not more usage.

04 · Models

What is currently the best AI model?

There isn't one best model in October 2026. Each vendor shipped a new top model in the last five weeks: GPT-6 in ChatGPT on October 7, Gemini 4 Argon on October 13, and Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, alongside Fable 5.1 from September 1. Pick the assistant by the job, not by the model name.

ChatGPT Claude Gemini
Newest top model GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra (Pro 100 and up, Business, Enterprise) Fable 5.1 (Max, Team premium, Enterprise; Pro via credits) Gemini 4 Argon (AI Pro and Ultra)
Everyday model GPT-6, powered by GPT-6 Sol Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 Pro and Flash models
Free plan model GPT-5.6 Luna Sonnet and Haiku Flash-Lite
Released in the last 5 weeks GPT-6 in Chat (Oct 7), GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex (Sep 29) Opus 5.5 (Sep 22), Sonnet 5.5 (Sep 28), Haiku 5.5 (Oct 7) Gemini 4 Argon (Oct 13)

Sources: OpenAI ChatGPT release notes and GPT-6 and other models; Claude release notes and models overview; Google Gemini release notes and subscriptions. All opened 2026-10-22.

Leaderboards change weekly and none of them test your work. A model that wins a coding benchmark can still write a worse follow-up email to your client. That's why the test below uses real small-business tasks, not puzzles.

An AI operator at a long wooden workbench sorts floating task tiles, a pen, an envelope, a microphone, a magnifying glass, a spreadsheet grid and code arrows, toward three plain clay machines in sand, slate and sky blue.

05 · Job by Job

Best for writing, research, data, building, images and meetings

Each tool has one or two jobs where it clearly leads, and the rest is close. Claude leads on writing and building, ChatGPT on images and Office, Gemini on video and anything inside Google Workspace. Research is a three-way tie now that all three ship Deep Research.

Writing

Claude, for most founders. Its writing needs fewer edits to sound like you, in our experience, and skills let you save your style once and reuse it. ChatGPT is close and has more ways to shape output: projects, custom GPTs and memory. Gemini added skills on September 30, which will replace Gems. Test this yourself with task 1 of our benchmark; it's the fastest way to tell.

Research

A tie. ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and every Gemini plan from Free up list Deep Research or Research. Gemini is the cheapest way in, because Deep Research is on its free plan. Whichever you use, click the sources. A research report is only as good as the links under it.

Spreadsheets and data

Use the AI that lives in your spreadsheet. On Google Workspace Business Standard and up, Gemini works inside Sheets. On Microsoft 365, ChatGPT has an Excel add-in. Claude is strong at analysing an exported file and handing back a cleaned spreadsheet, which is how we use it for CRM exports.

Coding and building

Claude. Claude Code is included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and it's how I, a non-engineer, built Pareto OS, our internal CRM and matching tool. ChatGPT's Codex is a serious alternative and comes with Plus and Business. Gemini now builds Google Antigravity into its macOS app, with higher limits on AI Pro and Ultra. In our last bootcamp, applicants who used Claude Code passed the final project at 15%, against 6.9% for those who didn't (our talent report). That says more about people who build than about one tool.

Images and video

ChatGPT for images: image generation is part of Plus, and ChatGPT Slides now generates images inside decks. Gemini for video: video generation starts at Google AI Plus, AI Pro includes a limited Veo 3.1 Lite trial, and Ultra gets Veo 3.1. Claude's pricing page lists no image generation. It makes designs, decks and documents instead.

Meetings and voice

If your calls run on Google Meet, Gemini is already in the room on Workspace Business Standard and up. Otherwise, ChatGPT. Its Voice mode got new GPT-Live-1.1 voices on October 15, paid plans can upload audio for transcripts and summaries since October 6, and a Meetings plugin that takes notes is in beta on the macOS desktop app for Pro and Business. Claude's pricing page lists voice on every plan, but no meeting note-taker.

Google Workspace vs Microsoft shops

This is the decision that matters most for a team, and it isn't about model quality. A Workspace company already has Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Meet on Business Standard. A Microsoft company gets more from ChatGPT's Office add-ins. Claude connects to both: Google Drive, Gmail and Google Calendar connectors on Team, and a Microsoft 365 connector that can now draft and send email and update OneDrive and SharePoint files once an admin enables it.

06 · Privacy

Which one trains on your data?

None of the three trains on business-plan data by default: Claude Team and Enterprise, ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and Google Workspace and Gemini Enterprise all exclude company data from training. Personal plans are different. On all three, a setting decides whether your chats help train models, so check it before you paste anything sensitive.

ChatGPT Claude Gemini
Business plans No training on Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace content by default No training on Team or Enterprise by default Workspace: company data excluded from model training. Gemini Enterprise: customer data not used to train Google models
Personal plans OpenAI may use conversations; turn off "Improve the model for everyone" A Model Improvement setting in Privacy Settings While "Keep Activity" is on, Google uses activity to improve services, including training generative AI models
Private mode Temporary chats: not used for training, kept up to 30 days Incognito chats: never used to improve Claude Temporary chats: not used for training, kept 72 hours
Human review Not described in the pages we opened Feedback chats stored up to 5 years A subset of chats is reviewed by humans; reviewed chats kept up to 3 years
Default retention Chats stay in history until deleted Set per plan Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default

Sources: OpenAI Help Center, Data controls, Business overview and Plus; Anthropic Privacy Center, Is my data used for model training? (March 16, 2026), and Claude pricing; Google, Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, Workspace pricing and Gemini subscriptions. All opened 2026-10-22.

One Gemini detail catches people. Google says connected apps such as Google Workspace are unavailable in the personal Gemini app if you turn off Keep Activity. So on a personal Google account, privacy and Gmail access are a trade. On a Workspace account, that trade doesn't apply.

The bigger risk on all three is the same: staff using personal accounts for company work. The default on their account applies, not your policy. A team plan is the cheapest privacy control you can buy.

07 · Changelog

What changed this month?

This is the first edition, so the log covers September 16 to October 22, 2026. Each month I add the changes that affect a business buyer and drop the rest.

Date Tool What changed Why it matters

Sep 22 Claude Opus 5.5 Anthropic says it costs 40% less to run than Opus 5
Sep 16 Claude Cowork in every conversation; designs, decks and docs in any chat No mode switch for bigger tasks on Pro and Max

Sources: ChatGPT release notes, ChatGPT Pro tiers, Claude release notes and Gemini release notes, all opened 2026-10-22. Dates are each vendor's release-note date; rollouts can take weeks.

What it changed in the verdict: nothing yet. Three new top models in five weeks moved the leaderboards, not the job-by-job picks. The one change I'd act on: if you're on ChatGPT Pro 200, check your usage after October 29.

08 · Method

How we test them

We use one 10-task test of real small-business work, the same one published on our Claude vs ChatGPT page: same prompts, same files, three runs each, blind scoring out of 250. Gemini gets added to it on Google Workspace Business Standard. No results are published yet, for any of the three, until all have been run the same way.

I'm linking the protocol rather than copying it, so there's one version to keep current. In short:

  • Ten tasks a small business actually does: a follow-up email, a P&L summary, an SOP from a transcript, a lead-list clean-up, a landing page, a contract review, a competitor brief, inbox triage, a KPI summary and a form-to-CRM script.
  • Five criteria, 5 points each: accuracy, follows the brief, ready to use, effort, and safety and judgment.
  • Same seat level. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business standard seats at $25. For Gemini, a Workspace Business Standard seat, so it runs inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets the way a team would use it.

When results exist, they'll go in this section with the date, the model each tool picked and the scores. Until then, every "Use" in the table at the top is judgment, and I've labeled it that way.

09 · The Stack

Do you need more than one AI?

For a team, pick one as the home for company files, connectors and permissions, and give one or two builders a seat on a second. Two company workspaces means two places for knowledge and twice the setup nobody maintains. For a solo founder, $40 for two $20 plans for one month is the cheapest way to find your fit.

Here's what that looks like by company:

Your company Home base Add
Google Workspace, under 20 people Gemini, via Business Standard ($14 a user, 1-year) One Claude Pro or Team seat for whoever builds
Microsoft 365 ChatGPT Business Claude for long documents, if one person lives in them
Operations-heavy service business Claude Team Gemini inside Workspace for email and Meet notes
Content or creative team ChatGPT Business Google AI Pro for video
Solo founder Any $20 plan A second $20 plan for one month, then cancel the loser

My recommendation from running Pareto Talent on Claude and Google Workspace, and from what each vendor documents. Disclosed bias: we're a paying Claude Team customer.

Here's what I've seen running Pareto: the companies that get value from AI don't have a better chatbot. They have someone who sets it up, connects it and keeps it current when the tools change. This page changes every month. Your setup should too, and that's a job.

Picking the tool takes 10 minutes. Making it run your business is the job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
None wins every job. As of October 2026, Claude is the best pick for writing, long documents and building tools, ChatGPT for images, voice and Microsoft Office, and Gemini for Google Workspace companies and video. Each costs about $20 a month for one person: Claude Pro $20, ChatGPT Plus $20, Google AI Pro $19.99.
What is the best AI assistant for business?
The one that fits the software your team already uses. A Google Workspace company already has Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Meet on Business Standard at $14 a user. A Microsoft 365 company gets the most from ChatGPT Business. A business that wants internal tools built should start with Claude Team. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business both cost $25 a seat, or $20 annually.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT?
For some jobs. Gemini is better if you work inside Google Workspace, need video generation, or want Deep Research on a free plan. ChatGPT is better for image generation, voice conversations and Microsoft Office add-ins. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and ChatGPT Plus $20, so price doesn't settle it.
Which is better, Claude or Gemini?
Claude for writing, long documents and building tools with Claude Code. Gemini for Google Workspace, video and storage: Google AI Pro includes 5 TB. Both list a context window of up to 1M tokens. Many Workspace teams use both: Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and a Claude seat for whoever builds.
Can Claude and ChatGPT work together?
Not directly inside one chat, but they can share the same tools. Both connect to Google Drive and Slack, and both support MCP, the open standard for plugging AI into other software, so they can read the same files and systems. For a team, keep one as the home for company knowledge and give a second seat only to people who need it.
What is the best AI subscription for the money?
For one person, Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually is the cheapest full plan, and includes a coding agent. Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month adds the most extras, including 5 TB of storage and video generation. Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the cheapest paid tier of the three.
What is currently the best AI model?
There isn't a single best one. In the five weeks to October 22, 2026, OpenAI shipped GPT-6, Google shipped Gemini 4 Argon and Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Rankings move weekly. Pick the assistant by the job and the software you already use, then test it on your own work.
What shouldn't you tell ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
On a personal plan, avoid client data, passwords, financial account numbers and anything under a confidentiality agreement unless you've turned off model training. All three may use personal-plan chats to improve their models depending on your settings. Business plans on all three don't train on your data by default, so put company work there.
