Claude Pricing (October 2026): Every Plan, and Which to Pick

AI Operator ·Published October 22, 2026 ·By Ivan Bunin

A founder with his hand on his chin stands by a stack of clay pedestals while an AI operator at a laptop points to a floating plan tile marked with a check.

Last verified 2026-10-22 against Anthropic's pricing page and help center. We re-check this page every month and within 48 hours of any Anthropic plan change.

TL;DR

Claude pricing in October 2026: Free is $0. Pro is $20 a month ($17 on annual). Max is $100 (5x Pro's usage) or $200 (20x). Team is $25 a seat ($20 annual), or $125 ($100 annual) for a premium seat. Enterprise is $20 a seat on annual billing plus all usage at API rates, 20 seats minimum. Claude Code is in every paid plan. The API runs from $0.10 to $10 per million input tokens. Below: which plan fits your business size, and what our own 12-seat team actually paid.

Most Claude pricing pages tell you the sticker price. That's the easy part. The sticker price for my whole 12-person team is a few hundred dollars a month.

The real bill is different. It depends on who uses Claude Code, who hits their limits, and whether anyone set up the account properly. In September our total was $1,461, and more than half of it was usage nobody had budgeted.

So this guide does two things. It lists every plan and price from Anthropic's own pages, checked today. Then it shows what a business actually pays, using our own October 2026 bill.

01 · The Short Answer

How much does Claude cost?

Claude costs $0 on Free, $20 a month on Pro, $100 or $200 on Max, $25 a seat on Team ($20 billed annually) and $20 a seat plus usage on Enterprise. Every paid plan includes Claude Code. If you hit your plan's limits, extra usage is billed at API rates.

$20Pro, a month. The plan most solo founders need
$20 to $125A Team seat, depending on seat type and billing
$1,461What our 12-seat team paid in total in September 2026

Sources: Claude pricing, opened 2026-10-22; Pareto Talent's own Claude bill, September 2026 ($540 in seats plus $921 in extra usage).

Three things on the pricing page are easy to miss:

  • Usage limits are not message counts. Every plan resets on a rolling 5-hour session, and paid plans add a weekly limit. Chat, the desktop app and Claude Code all draw from the same pool.
  • Max is monthly only. Pro and Team have annual discounts. Max doesn't.
  • Enterprise bills every token. The $20 seat is a platform fee. Usage is billed on top at API rates from the first token.

02 · Individual Plans

Claude Free vs Pro vs Max: which do you need?

Use Free to try Claude. Buy Pro at $20 the day you use it for work, because Pro adds Claude Code, unlimited projects, more models and at least 5x the usage. Move to Max only when you hit Pro's limits most weeks.

Free Pro Max 5x Max 20x
Price $0 $20, or $17 on annual $100 $200
Session usage Baseline At least 5x Free 5x Pro 20x Pro
Claude Code No Yes Yes Yes
Projects Up to 5 Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Opus models No Yes Yes Yes
Fable model No Only on usage credits Up to 50% of weekly limits Up to 50% of weekly limits
Hand off and schedule tasks No Yes Yes Yes
Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 No Yes Yes Yes
Monthly API credits No No $100 $200
Priority access at busy times No No Yes Yes
Billing n/a Monthly or annual Monthly Monthly

Source: Claude pricing plan comparison, opened 2026-10-22. Free, Pro and Max are consumer plans: model training on your chats is opt-out, not off by default.

That last line matters for a business. On Free, Pro and Max you have to opt out of model training yourself. On Team and Enterprise, there's no training on your content by default. If anyone on your team is pasting client data into Claude, that alone is a reason to be on Team.

03 · Pro vs Max

Claude Pro vs Max: is 5x or 20x worth it?

Max 5x is worth it when you hit Pro's limit most days and lose time waiting for the reset. Max 20x is worth it when you run Claude Code or agents for hours at a stretch. If you only hit Pro's limit once a week, buy usage credits instead.

Here's how I'd decide:

  • You hit the limit once or twice a week. Stay on Pro and turn on usage credits. You'll pay API rates for the overflow, which is usually cheaper than $80 more a month.
  • You hit the limit most days. Max 5x at $100. Five times the session usage for five times the price, plus $100 a month in API credits if you build on the API.
  • You run long Claude Code sessions or agents every day. Max 20x at $200. Twenty times Pro's session usage for ten times the price.

One more option, if there are at least two of you. A Team premium seat costs $100 a month on annual billing and gives 6.25x Pro's session usage (Claude Help Center). That's more usage than Max 5x for the same $100, plus admin controls and no training on your content by default. Team needs a minimum of two members.

Is Claude Pro worth it? For anyone using Claude for work, yes. Claude Code alone is worth $20. The real question isn't Pro's price. It's whether you'll set Claude up well enough to use it every day.

04 · Claude Code

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code costs nothing extra. It's included in Pro ($20), Max ($100 or $200), every Team seat and Enterprise, and it shares one usage pool with chat. Heavy users pay more through usage credits at API rates, or by moving to a bigger plan.

Plan Claude Code included? What a heavy day costs you
Free No n/a
Pro Yes You hit the session limit and wait, or pay usage credits
Max 5x / 20x Yes Usually nothing more; 5x or 20x Pro's session usage
Team, standard Yes Usage credits once the seat's limit is hit
Team, premium Yes Usage credits after 6.25x Pro's session usage
Enterprise Yes Every token at API rates

Source: Claude pricing FAQ, "Is Claude Code included in my plan?", and the Team usage credits article, opened 2026-10-22.

What does that mean in dollars? Our heaviest Claude Code user spent $243 in extra usage in 6 days in October, on top of a Team seat, against a $300 monthly cap the admin had set. For planning, we budget $300 to $1,000 a month in extra usage per power user, on top of the seat. That's our own experience in October 2026, not a benchmark. A person who uses Claude Code for an hour a day will spend far less.

Is the $20 Claude Code worth it? Yes, for learning and for short daily sessions. You'll hit the limit inside a long build. That's the signal to move up, not to quit.

05 · Cowork

How much does Claude Cowork cost?

Claude Cowork has no separate price. It's part of the paid plans and draws from the same usage as chat and Claude Code. Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic has been merging Cowork and chat into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Team and Free to follow.

The closest line on the pricing page is Pro's "hand off and schedule tasks": you give Claude a report or a deck, close the laptop, and it keeps working. The cost question is the same as Claude Code. Long background tasks burn more usage, so the people who hand off the most work are the ones who hit limits.

Sources: Anthropic, "Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude", September 16, 2026; Claude pricing, opened 2026-10-22.

06 · Team and Enterprise

Claude Team vs Enterprise: when does a business need them?

A business needs Team as soon as two or more people use Claude for work. It needs Enterprise only when IT asks for SCIM, audit logs, custom data retention or a HIPAA-ready setup, or when it passes 150 seats. For most companies under 50 people, Team is the answer.

Team Enterprise
Seat price $25, or $20 annual; premium $125, or $100 annual $20 a seat, annual only
Usage Included per seat, with weekly limits; usage credits beyond that Billed at API rates from the first token
Seats 2 to 150 20 minimum
API credits $20 per standard seat, $100 per premium, pooled, capped at $500 a month None
Identity SSO and domain verification Adds SCIM, domain capture, role-based access
Compliance Usage analytics Adds audit logs, compliance API, custom retention, HIPAA-ready option
Billing Card, monthly or annual Card or ACH self-serve; invoicing through sales

Sources: Claude pricing plan comparison and the monthly API credits article, opened 2026-10-22.

Enterprise's seat price looks the same as Team's annual seat. It isn't the same bill. On Team, your $20 buys a usage allowance. On Enterprise, your $20 buys access, and every token is billed on top. A team that uses Claude all day can pay a lot more on Enterprise.

How much does Claude Code Enterprise cost? There's no separate Claude Code price on Enterprise. It's included, and its usage is billed at API rates like everything else. Anthropic offers a tailored quote through sales for larger deals.

For the full business setup (projects, connectors, skills and who owns them), see our Claude for business guide.

07 · The API

How much does the Claude API cost?

The Claude API costs $0.10 to $10 per million input tokens and $0.50 to $50 per million output tokens, depending on the model. Batch processing cuts that in half. You pay only for what you use, with no subscription, which suits apps, agents and scheduled jobs better than a seat.

Model Best for Input, per million tokens Output, per million tokens Cache read
Fable 5.1 Long-running agents $10 $50 $0.25
Opus 5.5 Daily driver for agentic coding and enterprise work $4 $20 $0.20
Sonnet 5.5 Coding and agents at lower cost $2 $10 $0.10
Haiku 5.5 Fast, cheap, high volume (prompts up to 100K tokens) $0.10 $0.50 $0.01
Haiku 5.5 Prompts over 100K tokens $0.50 $2.50 $0.05

Source: Claude pricing, API tab, opened 2026-10-22. Batch processing saves 50%. US-only inference costs 1.1x. Fast mode for Opus 5.5 costs 2x standard pricing. Older models (Opus 5, Sonnet 5, Haiku 4.5 and earlier) are still listed at their own rates.

API or subscription? Use a subscription for people. Use the API for software. A person chatting and building in Claude Code gets far more out of a $20 to $200 plan than the same work would cost token by token. A script that runs every night, or an agent built into your product, belongs on the API, where it doesn't eat anyone's weekly limit.

Our rule of thumb: if no human is watching it run, it goes on the API.

08 · The Chooser

Which Claude plan should your business buy?

Solo founders buy Pro, or Max if they build all day. Teams of 2 to 10 buy Team with one premium seat per builder. Teams of 10 to 50 buy Team and cap usage per person. Past 50, stay on Team until IT needs Enterprise's controls or you pass 150 seats.

Your business Buy this Example monthly cost
Solo, writing and thinking Pro $20, or $17 on annual
Solo, building with Claude Code most days Max 5x, or Max 20x for all-day agents $100 or $200
2 to 10 people Team: standard seats, plus a premium seat for each person who builds 5 people, 1 premium: $180 on annual, $225 monthly
10 to 50 people Team, with premium seats for 2 to 5 power users and a spend cap on each 25 people, 3 premium: $740 on annual, $925 monthly, plus extra usage
50+ people Team up to 150 seats; Enterprise if IT needs SCIM, audit logs or custom retention 60 Enterprise seats: $1,200 plus all usage at API rates

Plan fit is my recommendation from running Pareto Talent on Claude. Totals are my arithmetic from the seat prices on Claude pricing, opened 2026-10-22. Example: 4 standard seats at $20 plus 1 premium at $100 is $180.

Why Team beats a handful of Pro subscriptions: on annual billing, a standard Team seat costs the same $20 as monthly Pro. For that price you get 1.25x Pro's session usage, shared projects, central billing, admin control over connectors, no training on your content by default, and $20 a seat in API credits. Once two people use Claude for work, there's no reason to stay on separate Pros.

09 · Our Own Bill

What does Claude actually cost a business each month?

For our 12-seat team, Claude costs roughly $1,500 to $1,800 a month: a few hundred dollars in seats and the rest in extra usage. In September 2026 it was $540 in seats plus $921 in extra usage, $1,461 in all. Three power users drive almost all of the extra.

These are our real numbers, from our own bill, October 2026. Team-level only.

Seats

We're on Team with 12 seats, a mix of standard and premium. Seats are billed on the 16th of each month.

Month Seat invoice Members billed
August 2026 $459 7
September 2026 $540 10
October 2026 $648 9

Source: Pareto Talent's own Claude invoices, our own bill, October 2026. The seat mix includes premium seats, so these totals don't divide into a per-seat price. Per-seat list prices are on Claude pricing.

Extra usage

Extra usage is what you pay once someone hits their seat's limit. We run it on auto-reload: whenever the balance falls to $5, it tops back up to $50.

Month Extra usage from top-ups
July 2026 About $202
August 2026 About $18
September 2026 About $921, mostly about 19 auto-reloads of about $49 each
October 1 to 12, 2026 About $421

Source: our own bill, October 2026. Excludes a $756 prepaid block bought on October 12 (with it, October 1 to 12 comes to about $1,177). Our billing page offered prepaid blocks at a discount of up to 30%.

September's $921 was more than the seats themselves. Nineteen small $49 charges don't feel like a budget line while they're happening. They add up to one.

Small wooden desks on a clay platform, three of them under tall glowing columns of clay coins, while an AI operator holds a large dial gauge to cap the spend.

Who drives the extra cost

From October 16 to 22, month to date, here's what each seat spent beyond its plan:

  • 3 heavy users: $292, $243 and $155. Two of them have a $300 monthly cap set by the admin.
  • 1 light user: $22.
  • The other 8 seats: $0.

That's $690 of $712, about 97%, from three people. They're the ones using Claude Code, Cowork and agents. Most seats never go past the plan. So don't budget extra usage per seat. Budget it per power user, and cap each one.

The $480 a month we left on the table

Team includes monthly API credits: $20 per standard seat and $100 per premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. For our seat mix that's $480 a month. We haven't claimed it, because the credits only arrive once an owner links a Claude Console (API) organization to the plan (Claude Help Center). Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. That's $5,760 a year we paid for and didn't use.

Two details before you rush to claim yours:

  • The credits don't cover interactive Claude Code or extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork. They cover the API, the Console playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK.
  • They do cover scripts you run with an API key from the linked organization, including claude -p. That's where our scheduled jobs belong.

The lesson isn't really about $480. It's that nobody on the team owned the account. Seats were added, auto-reload was switched on, and nobody looked at where the money went until the bill was bigger than the seats.

What the full monthly cost looks like

Line Our 12-seat team
Seats $459 to $648
Extra usage About $20 to $920, driven by 3 power users
Unclaimed API credits $480 of value, unused
Total paid Roughly $1,500 to $1,800 in a heavy month

Source: our own bill, October 2026. Totals are my arithmetic from the invoices above.

The line that isn't on Anthropic's invoice is the person who runs it. Someone has to pick the seats, set the caps, link the API organization, build the projects and skills, and look at the usage page every week. If nobody does, you pay for seats that sit idle and overflow that nobody planned.

10 · Lower the Bill

How do you keep Claude costs under control?

Give premium seats to the few people who build all day, standard seats to everyone else, and a monthly spend cap to every power user. Move unattended jobs to the API. Link an API organization so Team's credits aren't wasted. Then check the usage page weekly.

  • Premium seats for builders only. Usage limits are per person and can't be shared, so match the seat to the person.
  • Cap every power user. Team owners can set organization-wide and per-user monthly limits. Ours sit at $300 for two of our heavy users.
  • Claim the API credits. Link one Console organization. It's a one-time choice, so pick the one you'll build in.
  • Put scheduled jobs on the API. Nightly scripts shouldn't burn a person's weekly limit.
  • Pick the model for the job. Anthropic's own advice: Haiku or the latest Sonnet for most tasks, Opus when it matters.
  • Pay annually once headcount is stable. Team's annual seat saves $5 a month on standard and $25 on premium.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does Claude Team cost?
Claude Team costs $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually, for a standard seat. A premium seat, with 5x the usage of a standard seat, costs $125 a month or $100 billed annually. Team needs at least 2 members and supports up to 150. Prices verified on Anthropic's pricing page on 2026-10-22.
Is the $20 Claude Code worth it?
Yes, for learning Claude Code and for short daily sessions. Pro includes Claude Code at no extra cost, sharing one usage pool with chat. You will hit the 5-hour session limit inside long builds. When that happens most days, move to Max 5x at $100, or a Team premium seat if you have a team.
What's the most expensive Claude subscription?
For one person, Max 20x at $200 a month is the most expensive plan, with 20x Pro's session usage and $200 a month in API credits. For businesses, Enterprise has no ceiling: $20 a seat on annual billing, 20 seats minimum, plus every token billed at API rates.
How much does Claude Code Enterprise cost?
Claude Code has no separate Enterprise price. It is included in Enterprise, which costs $20 a seat a month billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates. Heavy Claude Code users therefore cost more on Enterprise than light ones. Larger companies can get a tailored quote from Anthropic's sales team.
Can you run out of usage on Claude Pro?
Yes. Pro has a session limit that resets every 5 hours and a weekly limit, shared across chat, the apps and Claude Code. When you hit one, you can wait for the reset, upgrade to Max, or turn on usage credits and keep working at standard API rates. Check where you stand in Settings, then Usage.
What is the Claude Team usage limit?
A Team standard seat gets 1.25x Pro's usage per 5-hour session, and a premium seat gets 6.25x, each with a weekly limit across all models. Limits are per person, not pooled, so one heavy user can't use up a colleague's allowance. Owners can enable usage credits so people keep working past the limit.
What's the difference between Claude Team premium and Max 20x?
Max 20x is a $200-a-month personal plan with 20x Pro's session usage. A Team premium seat costs $125 a month, or $100 on annual billing, with 6.25x Pro's session usage, plus admin controls, central billing and no training on your content by default. Max 20x gives more raw usage; Team premium suits businesses.
What are the changes to Claude subscriptions?
Two recent ones. Max and Team plans now include monthly API credits: $100 or $200 on Max, and $20 per standard and $100 per premium Team seat, pooled up to $500. And since September 16, 2026, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, starting with Pro and Max.
