Claude vs ChatGPT for Business: Plans, Prices and a 10-Task Test (2026)
Claude vs ChatGPT, for a business: the team plans now cost the same to the dollar. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business are both $25 a seat a month ($20 billed annually), with $125 ($100 annual) premium seats, and neither trains on your workspace data by default. The real differences are elsewhere. ChatGPT has image generation, voice and the bigger app catalog built in. Claude has a 1M-token context window listed on every plan, Claude Code, and skills that turn a repeat task into a button. Pick ChatGPT if your work is mostly content, images and quick answers across a large team. Pick Claude if your work is long documents, operations and internal tools. We run Pareto Talent on Claude, so read our verdict with that in mind. Prices checked on both vendors' pages on 2026-10-22.

Most "Claude vs ChatGPT" pages compare the chatbots. They ask which one writes a better poem. That isn't the question a business owner has.
Your question is which one your company should run on. Which plan to buy for ten people. Which one reads a 40-page contract without losing the thread. Which one can touch your Gmail, your CRM and your Slack. Which one keeps your data out of training. And which one your team will still be using in six months.
So this guide compares the two as business software, from both vendors' own pricing and help pages, opened today. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, I say so instead of guessing.
My bias, stated up front. Pareto Talent runs on Claude. We're on the Team plan with 12 seats, all in use. I built our internal CRM with Claude Code. I've tried to make this page useful even if you pick ChatGPT, and our certified operators are trained on both.
01 · The Short Answer
Claude vs ChatGPT: which is better for business?
Neither wins everything. ChatGPT is the better all-in-one assistant for a broad team: images, voice, a large app catalog and Microsoft Office add-ins. Claude is the better choice for long documents, careful writing and building internal tools, thanks to a 1M-token context window on every plan, Claude Code and skills. At $25 a seat, the price doesn't decide it.
Here's the verdict by job, from what each vendor documents today plus how we use Claude day to day:
| The job | Lean | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Images, ad mockups, thumbnails | ChatGPT | Image generation is built into Plus and every paid plan. Claude's pricing page lists none |
| Voice conversations on the go | ChatGPT | ChatGPT Voice runs in Chat, Work and Codex |
| Reading long contracts, transcripts, reports | Claude | Claude lists up to a 1M-token context window on every plan |
| Writing that sounds like you | Claude, slightly | Our experience; test it with task 1 of the benchmark below |
| Spreadsheet analysis | Tie | Both run code on your files; ChatGPT adds Excel and PowerPoint add-ins |
| Connecting Gmail, Drive, Slack | Tie | Both have first-party connectors and both accept custom MCP servers |
| Building internal tools and automations | Claude, slightly | Claude Code plus skills and scheduled tasks. Codex is close and included in ChatGPT Business |
| One tool for a 50-person team that mostly asks questions | ChatGPT | Familiar to most staff, and the widest feature set at the same seat price |
Feature facts from the pricing and help pages listed under Sources. The "Lean" column is my judgment from running a company on Claude, not a test result.
02 · Price
Claude vs ChatGPT pricing: what does each cost a business?
For a team, they cost exactly the same: $25 a standard seat a month, or $20 billed annually, and $125 or $100 for a premium seat with 5x the usage. Both need at least 2 seats. One person pays $20 a month on either. The differences are annual billing, power tiers, API credits and Enterprise.
Here's what a business actually pays at three sizes, on standard seats, billed annually:
| Team size | Claude Team | ChatGPT Business |
|---|---|---|
| 2 people | $40 a month | $40 a month |
| 10 people, 1 premium seat for your builder | $280 a month ($20 × 9 + $100) | $280 a month ($20 × 9 + $100) |
| 25 people | $500 a month | $500 a month |
My arithmetic from the published seat prices in the table above. Monthly billing adds $5 a standard seat and $25 a premium seat on both.
Four differences the seat price hides:
- Annual billing for one person. Claude Pro has an annual option at $17 a month. ChatGPT Plus and Pro are monthly only, per OpenAI's Help Center.
- API credits. Claude Team includes monthly API credits: $20 per standard seat and $100 per premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. You only get them after you link a Claude Console organization. ChatGPT Business doesn't include API usage; OpenAI bills it separately.
- Usage past the limit. Both sell credits for use beyond a seat's included limit. Claude calls them usage credits. OpenAI calls them workspace credits, under flexible pricing.
- Enterprise. Claude publishes it: $20 a seat billed annually, plus usage at API rates, 20 seats minimum. OpenAI sells ChatGPT Enterprise through sales and doesn't publish a seat price.
What Pareto actually spends on Claude
These are our numbers from our own Claude billing in October 2026. They're one company's experience, not a benchmark.
Source: Pareto Talent's Claude organization billing, August to October 2026. Our seat mix includes premium seats, so the seat total doesn't divide into a list price.
Two lessons. First, the seat price is not your bill. Three heavy users drive almost all of our extra usage. Between October 16 and 22 they spent $292, $243 and $155 beyond their seats, while 8 of our 12 seats spent nothing extra. The $243 was me, in 6 days of Claude Code, against a $300 monthly cap our admin set. If someone on your team will build with Claude all day, plan for roughly $300 to $1,000 a month of extra usage for that person, on top of the seat. That's our planning figure, not Anthropic's.
Second, read what's included. We've paid for API credits every month and used none of them. Ten minutes of setup would have fixed that.
If you're choosing between Claude's own plans, the Claude pricing guide covers Free, Pro, Max and Team in depth.
03 · One Seat
Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus (and Max vs Pro): which is worth it?
At $20 a month, both are worth it for a founder. Claude Pro adds Claude Code, unlimited projects and research, and has an annual option at $17. ChatGPT Plus adds image generation, voice, deep research and Codex. At $100 and $200, Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro buy 5x and 20x more usage. Only ChatGPT has a $500 tier.
| Claude Pro | ChatGPT Plus | Claude Max 5x / 20x | ChatGPT Pro 100 / 200 / 500 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20, or $17 annual | $20, monthly only | $100 / $200, monthly | $100 / $200 / $500, monthly only |
| Usage | Base | Base | 5x / 20x Pro, per session, plus a weekly limit | Pro 200 has more usage than Pro 100; Pro 500 has the most |
| Top models | Opus, Sonnet, Haiku; Fable via usage credits | GPT-6 (Medium and High thinking). Extra High and Pro thinking not included | Opus, Sonnet, Haiku; Fable at 50% of weekly limits | GPT-6 including GPT-6 Pro |
| Coding agent | Claude Code | Codex, with limited GPT-6 Astra | Claude Code | Codex, full allowance for GPT-6 Astra |
| Extras | Annual billing option | Image generation, voice, deep research | $100 / $200 a month in API credits | Ultrafast mode on Pro 500 only |
Sources: Claude pricing, Max plan, API credits for Max and Team; OpenAI's Plus, Pro tiers and GPT-6 and other models articles. All opened 2026-10-22.
A note on ChatGPT Pro 200, because OpenAI changed it this month. New Pro 200 subscriptions now include a lower usage allowance than before, at the same $200. Existing subscribers keep the old allowance through October 29, 2026. If you're comparing Max 20x with Pro 200 on usage, compare after that date.
My rule for one seat: start on the $20 plan of either. Move up only after you've hit the limit three weeks in a row. Most founders who think they need $200 a month need a better setup, not more usage.
04 · Models and Memory
What models and context window does each one have?
Claude's current models are Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, and Claude's pricing page lists up to a 1M-token context window on every plan. ChatGPT runs GPT-6 in chat, with GPT-6 Pro on Business and Pro plans, and GPT-6.1 Sol with a 500,000-token default context in its Work and Codex modes.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday model | Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 | GPT-6 (Instant to Extra High thinking) |
| Top model | Fable 5.1: Enterprise, Team premium, Max; Pro via credits | GPT-6 Pro: Business, Pro and Enterprise. Business standard gets 15 Pro messages a month, premium 50 a week |
| Free plan model | Sonnet, Haiku | GPT-5.6 Luna |
| Context window | Up to 1M tokens on every plan, varies by model | Not published per plan for chat. GPT-6.1 Sol: 500,000 tokens by default in Work and Codex |
Sources: Claude pricing and Claude models overview; OpenAI's GPT-6 and other models, Business models and limits and Work and Codex articles. All opened 2026-10-22.
Two honest caveats. Anthropic's own pages disagree: the pricing page lists "up to 1M" on every plan, while the Team plan help article still says 200K. And OpenAI no longer publishes a chat context window per plan in its Help Center. So test your longest real document on both before you rely on either number.
Why context matters to a business: it's how much the model can hold at once. A long contract, a quarter of call transcripts or your whole operations manual either fits in one conversation or it gets chopped up, and chopped-up documents are where answers go wrong.
05 · Files and Projects
How do files and projects compare?
Both let you upload large files and group work into projects with shared instructions. Claude takes up to 500MB per file and 20 files per chat, PDFs up to 1,000 pages, and 30MB per file inside a project. ChatGPT takes up to 512MB per file, 2 million tokens per document, and 40 files per project on Business and Pro.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Per file, in a chat | 500MB | 512MB; documents capped at 2M tokens; spreadsheets about 50MB |
| Files at once | 20 per chat | 80 every 3 hours; Free users 3 a day |
| PDFs | Up to 1,000 pages | Covered by the 512MB and 2M-token caps |
| Projects | Up to 5 on Free, unlimited on paid plans; shared on Team | Projects on Go and up; 40 files per project on Business, Pro, Enterprise |
| Project file size | 30MB per file | Same per-file caps as chat |
| Storage | Not published | 25GB per user, 100GB per organization |
| Makes files for you | Yes: documents, spreadsheets, slides | Yes, in Work: documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and Sites |
Sources: Claude Help Center, Upload files to Claude, and Claude pricing; OpenAI Help Center, File uploads FAQ and Work and Codex. All opened 2026-10-22.
In practice the limit you'll hit isn't file size. It's structure. A project with 40 dumped files and no instructions gives worse answers than one with 8 good files and a page that says what each one is. That page is the single most useful thing you can write, on either tool.
06 · Connectors
Which one connects to more of your business tools?
Both connect to the core of a small business: Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365. Both also accept custom connectors over MCP, the open standard for plugging AI into other software, so either can reach your CRM. ChatGPT has a larger app catalog and can start tasks when a new email arrives. Claude lets Team admins add a connector once for everyone.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in connectors named on the plan | Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365, Slack (Team) | Apps such as Google Drive and Slack; many enabled by default on Business |
| Custom connectors (MCP) | Free (1), Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise | "Add custom MCP server" under Plugins, subject to workspace policy |
| How a team gets them | An owner adds the connector to the organization; each member signs in with their own access | Admins enable or disable apps in the Admin Console |
| Triggered by events | Scheduled tasks in Claude Code; Cowork for desktop work | Work tasks that run on a new Gmail message, Slack message or GitHub pull request |
| Approval before acting | Claude for Small Business workflows ask before anything sends, posts or pays | May ask before reading or acting; "Allow all actions" can be turned on per app |
| Microsoft Office | Microsoft 365 connector on Team | ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint |
Sources: Claude Help Center, Team plan and custom connectors using remote MCP; Claude Code overview; OpenAI Help Center, Apps in ChatGPT, and OpenAI developer docs, Connect from ChatGPT; Anthropic, Claude for Small Business (May 13, 2026). Opened 2026-10-22.
The setting I'd check first, on either tool: who can turn on a connector and what it's allowed to do. A connector that can send email for you is a new employee with your password. Keep "ask before acting" on for anything that sends, posts or pays.
07 · Agents and Coding
Claude Code vs Codex: which is better for building?
Both are real coding agents that read your files, run commands and build working software, and both come with the business plan at no extra seat cost. Claude Code runs in the terminal, IDEs, a desktop app, the web and Slack, and adds skills, hooks and scheduled tasks. Codex runs in the ChatGPT desktop app, a CLI and Codex Cloud, and is included in ChatGPT Business standard seats.
| Claude Code | Codex | |
|---|---|---|
| Included in | Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise (not Free) | Business, Plus, Pro, Enterprise; Free and Go on a lighter model |
| Where it runs | Terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop app, web, mobile, Slack | ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI, Codex Cloud from desktop, web or mobile |
| Runs while you're away | Cloud scheduled tasks, triggered by a schedule, an API call or GitHub events | Codex Cloud tasks keep running on OpenAI's computers |
| Project memory | CLAUDE.md, read at the start of every session, plus auto memory | ChatGPT Projects context in Work; repository context in Codex |
| Reusable workflows | Skills, hooks, subagents | Plugins, Work tasks |
| Usage | Shares one pool with chat; usage credits after the limit | Separate allowance from chat; workspace credits after the limit |
Sources: Claude Code overview and Claude pricing; OpenAI Help Center, ChatGPT Work and Codex, GPT-6 and other models and Business overview. All opened 2026-10-22.
For a business owner, the coding agent is where most of the value is. It's how a non-engineer gets a quote calculator, an onboarding portal or a lead-routing script without hiring a developer. I'm not an engineer, and Pareto OS, our internal CRM and matching tool, was built with Claude Code.
One data point from our own training: in our last bootcamp, applicants who used Claude Code passed the final project at 15%, against 6.9% for those who didn't (our talent report). That says more about people who build than about one tool beating another. If your team lives in ChatGPT, Codex is a serious option and you don't need to switch to get it.
If you want the developer-level comparison, our guide to hiring a Claude Code developer covers where an operator stops and an engineer starts.

08 · Privacy
Does Claude or ChatGPT train on your business data?
Not on the business plans. Anthropic doesn't train on Claude Team or Enterprise content by default, and OpenAI doesn't train on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace content by default. On personal plans it's a setting: both may use your chats to improve their models unless you switch it off.
| Claude | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Business plans | No training by default on Team and Enterprise | No training by default on Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare |
| Personal plans | Free, Pro, Max: a Model Improvement setting you control; Incognito chats are never used | Free, Go, Plus, Pro: "Improve the model for everyone" is on until you turn it off; Temporary chats are never used |
| Coding agent | Follows the plan's policy | On personal plans, the same setting covers Codex; a separate "Include environments" setting covers environment context |
| Feedback buttons | Thumbs up or down can be stored for up to 5 years | Feedback can make the whole conversation usable for training, even after opting out |
| Regulated data | Enterprise: custom retention, audit logs, HIPAA-ready option | Contracted offerings for Zero Data Retention and BAAs; not self-serve Business |
Sources: Claude pricing and Anthropic Privacy Center, Is my data used for model training? (March 16, 2026); OpenAI Help Center, Data controls in ChatGPT and Business overview. All opened 2026-10-22.
The practical risk isn't the vendor. It's your team using personal accounts for company work. If three people pay for Plus or Pro on their own cards and paste client data into them, the default on those accounts applies, not your business policy. Buying the team plan is the cheapest privacy control you have.
09 · Original Asset
The 10-task business benchmark: how we test both
We built a 10-task test of real small-business work to run through Claude and ChatGPT side by side. This is the test protocol. Results are coming in the next update. I haven't run the ChatGPT side yet, so I'm not publishing scores for either tool until both have been run the same way.
The method
- Same plan level. Claude Team standard seat against ChatGPT Business standard seat. Both cost $25 a month.
- Same inputs. One prompt per task, written once and pasted unchanged. The same files, from a fictional company we made up for the test, so no client data is used.
- Default model. Whatever each tool picks by default on that seat, plus one run on its strongest model on that seat. We record the model name the picker shows and the date.
- Fresh start. A new chat or project per run, no memory, no custom instructions beyond the prompt.
- Three runs each. AI output varies, so each task runs 3 times per tool and we score the median run.
- Blind scoring. Two reviewers score outputs with the tool names removed. If they disagree by more than 5 points, a third reviewer decides.
- No unapproved actions. Connector tasks run on a test Gmail and Slack. Nothing gets sent.
The scoring rubric
Each task is scored out of 25, so the full test is out of 250.
| Criterion | 0 points | 5 points |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Wrong facts, wrong numbers, invented sources | Every fact and number checks out against the input |
| Follows the brief | Ignores length, format or audience | Hits every instruction in the prompt |
| Ready to use | Needs a rewrite | Usable after under 2 minutes of edits |
| Effort | Needed 4 or more follow-up prompts | Done in one prompt |
| Safety and judgment | Acted without approval, or hid a problem | Flagged what it wasn't sure of and asked before acting |
The 10 tasks, and what each vendor documents for them
| # | Task | What it tests | What Claude documents | What ChatGPT documents |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Write a follow-up email from messy sales-call notes, in the founder's voice | Writing, tone | Projects with instructions; skills for repeat formats | Projects, custom GPTs, memory |
| 2 | Summarize a 12-month P&L export and name the 3 biggest changes | Spreadsheet analysis | File analysis and creation on all plans | Data analysis on uploaded spreadsheets up to about 50MB |
| 3 | Turn a 20-minute walkthrough transcript into a step-by-step SOP | Long input to structure | Up to a 1M-token context listed on every plan | Documents up to 2M tokens per file |
| 4 | Clean a 500-row lead list: remove duplicates, fix names, flag bad emails | Data cleaning | Runs code on files; returns a new spreadsheet | Data analysis runs Python on files |
| 5 | Build a one-page landing page for an offer, as working HTML | Building | Claude Code; artifacts in chat | Codex; Sites in Work |
| 6 | Flag the riskiest clauses in a 30-page vendor agreement | Long-document reading | PDFs up to 1,000 pages | 512MB and 2M-token file caps |
| 7 | Research 5 competitors and write a one-page brief with sources | Web research, citations | Research on paid plans | Deep research on paid plans |
| 8 | Triage the last 50 emails in a test inbox and draft replies, sending none | Connectors, restraint | Gmail connector; asks before acting | Gmail app; asks before acting |
| 9 | Build a weekly KPI summary from a shared Google Sheet | Connectors plus analysis | Google Drive connector | Google Drive app |
| 10 | Write a script that posts each new form entry to a CRM and to Slack | Coding agent | Claude Code, with MCP and scheduled tasks | Codex, with Codex Cloud |
The middle columns describe documented features from each vendor's pages listed under Sources, opened 2026-10-22. They are not results. Our upcoming ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison will reuse this same test.
If you want to run it yourself, copy the method above. The rubric matters more than the tasks. Most comparisons skip criterion five, and it's the one that costs a business money: an assistant that sends the wrong email confidently is worse than one that asks.
10 · The Verdict
Which should you pick, Claude or ChatGPT?
Pick by the work, not the brand. Content-heavy teams that need images, voice and Office add-ins should start with ChatGPT. Operations-heavy businesses that live in long documents and want internal tools built should start with Claude. If you're unsure, pay $20 for each for one month and run tasks 1, 3 and 8 of the benchmark below on both.
| Your business | Start with | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder, mostly writing, thinking and email | Either; Claude if your inputs are long | Claude Pro at $17 annual, or ChatGPT Plus at $20 |
| Marketing or creative agency | ChatGPT | Business, plus Claude Pro for your best writer |
| Service business: consulting, law, accounting, real estate | Claude | Team, standard seats |
| E-commerce or a team that lives in spreadsheets | Tie: test task 2 and 4 on both | Either team plan |
| A founder who wants internal tools built | Claude | Team with one premium seat for whoever builds |
| A team already standardized on ChatGPT | Stay. Add Codex before you switch | Business |
| Regulated data: health, finance, legal records | Either, on Enterprise | Talk to sales before anyone uploads data |
My recommendation from running Pareto Talent on Claude and from what each vendor documents. Disclosed bias: we're a Claude Team customer.
Should you pay for both?
For one or two people, yes, for a month. $40 buys you a real answer to which one fits your work. For a team, no. Pick one workspace as the home for company knowledge, connectors and permissions, and let the one or two power users keep a personal seat on the other. Two company workspaces means two places for files, two sets of permissions and twice the setup that nobody maintains.
What actually decides whether it works
Here's what I've seen running Pareto: the companies that get value from AI don't have a better tool than the ones that don't. They have someone who sets it up and keeps it set up. The project instructions, the connectors, the skills, the "who can do what" settings. That's a job, and on most teams nobody has it.
The tool matters less than who runs it.

The Replacement Guarantee: If your operator can't build what you need, or ever stops being the right fit, we replace them fast, with a full handover, for as long as you're with us.
