Hire an AI developer? First, decide what you're building.

Building a product? Hire a developer. Making AI run your business? Hire an AI Operator.

Most founders who search for an AI developer don't need software built for customers. They need someone to build the automations, internal tools and AI agents that run their own business, and keep them running. That's a different hire, at a different price.

The triage

Do you need an AI developer or an AI Operator?

One question sorts most cases: who will use the thing being built? If it's your customers, you're building a product. If it's you and your team, you're running a business on AI.

Building a product

Hire an AI developer

You're building software other people log into or pay for: a SaaS app, an AI feature inside your product, a customer-facing agent, a platform with users and data.

  • It needs code review, tests, security and a release process.
  • It will be maintained for years, by engineers.
  • Hire through a developer staffing firm, a freelance marketplace or your own recruiting.

Using Claude Code to build it? Our guide to hiring a Claude Code developer covers vetting and security.

Running your business on AI

Hire an AI Operator

You want AI doing the work inside your business: following up leads, triaging the inbox, writing call notes into the CRM, building the Monday report, an internal dashboard, a quiz or a landing page.

  • The builds are many and small, and the list grows every week.
  • Somebody has to watch every run and fix what breaks.
  • Full-time, in your Slack, your tools and your hours.

That's the job of a full-time AI operator.

Five questions to check your answer

Will customers log in to it?

Yes points to a developer. No, it's for my team, points to an operator.

Is it one big build, or a stream of small ones?

One large system with a spec points to a developer or an agency. A list of twenty automations that keeps growing points to an operator.

Does it run on tools you already pay for?

Gmail, Slack, your CRM, GoHighLevel, Zapier or n8n points to an operator. A new codebase and database points to a developer.

Who fixes it at 4pm on a Tuesday?

If the honest answer is "me", you need an owner more than you need a builder.

What happens when nothing needs building?

A developer waits for the next ticket. An operator runs your day-to-day operations.

What they build

What does an AI developer build, and what does an operator build?

Both build with AI. The difference is the audience and what happens after launch.

What about an AI agent developer?

"AI agent" gets stretched. A lot of what's sold as custom agent development is a well-built workflow with a model in the middle: read the email, decide what it is, draft a reply, update the CRM, tell someone in Slack. That's valuable, and it's exactly what a trained operator builds and runs every week.

Hire an AI agent developer when the agent is the product, when it talks to your customers at scale, or when it needs serious engineering: custom retrieval over large data, strict security review, or uptime someone is paid to guarantee. For the agents that run your own operations, hire the person who will also watch them run.

The cost

How much does it cost to hire an AI developer?

A US software developer earns a median $135,980 a year in salary, and the mean is $148,100 (BLS, May 2025). That's before benefits, payroll taxes, equipment and recruiting. A US hire takes about six weeks just to fill the seat (SHRM, 2025).

This compares cost, not like for like. A senior engineer building your product is worth the salary. The point is narrower: if the work is your own operations, you don't need to pay engineering rates for it. Every option priced side by side is in our AI operator cost guide.

How to vet

How do you vet an AI developer before you hire?

The same six checks work for a developer, a freelancer or an operator. Anyone can talk well about AI. Judge what they've shipped.

Ask for something live you can open

A link to a working tool, app or automation they built, not a screenshot or a slide. Ask what broke after launch and how they fixed it.

Run a small paid test on a real task

Two to five hours on something you actually need. Give them the same access a new hire would get. Judge the result and the questions they asked.

Ask how they'd handle your data

Which tools see your customer data, where API keys live, and what never goes into a prompt. A good builder has a clear answer before you ask twice.

Check whose accounts the work lives in

Every repository, workflow tool and API key should be in an account your business owns. Get it in writing.

Ask who maintains it in month six

Contractors move on. If nobody on your side can fix it, plan for that cost now.

Ask what it will cost to run

Model usage, workflow tasks and hosting are monthly bills. A builder should estimate them before building.

Proof, not promises

Certified on a build, not an interview

Anyone can talk well about AI. Every operator we certify finishes 40+ hours of training, then a 5-day final project where they build a full funnel with AI, scored on a 25-point rubric, plus an interview.

Common Questions

Hiring an AI developer: what founders ask

How much does it cost to hire an AI developer?+
In the US, a software developer earns a median $135,980 a year in salary (BLS, May 2025), before benefits, taxes and recruiting. Contractors and agencies bill by the hour or project. A full-time Pareto AI Operator is $3,600 a month, month to month, plus a one-time $3,000 placement fee.
What is the difference between an AI developer and an AI Operator?+
An AI developer builds software: an app, a platform or an AI feature your customers use. An AI Operator builds and runs the AI inside your business: automations, internal tools, dashboards and pages, then watches every run and fixes what breaks. One ships a product. The other runs your operations on AI.
How do I hire an AI developer for my business?+
Write down what you are building and who will use it. Shortlist people with shipped work you can open, run a small paid test on a real task, and check who will maintain the result. If the work is your own operations rather than a product, hire an AI Operator instead.
Can an AI Operator build AI agents?+
Yes, the kind most businesses run: inbox triage, lead follow-up, call notes into your CRM, reports and research agents. Every operator is trained on Claude Code and tools like n8n and Zapier. If the agent is a product you will sell, or needs serious engineering, hire a developer.
Where can I hire someone full-time to build AI automations?+
You can post a job and recruit yourself, which in the US takes about six weeks to fill, or use a developer staffing firm or freelance marketplace. We place full-time AI Operators: meet 3 certified profiles within 24 hours of a call and choose one.
Should I hire an AI developer or an AI agency?+
Hire an agency for one large, defined build that needs several specialists at once. Hire a developer if you are building software for customers and need it maintained for years. If the work is a stream of internal builds that need an owner, an AI Operator usually fits better than either.
Who owns the code and automations?+
You do. Every account, workflow and prompt your AI Operator builds stays in your name and is documented in your Ownership Binder. If we ever replace your operator, the work is handed over in full.
