What Is Claude Cowork? A Founder's Guide, With 10 Business Tasks (2026)
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent for knowledge work. You describe an outcome, and Claude plans the steps, works across your files, browser and connected apps, and hands back a finished document, spreadsheet, deck or research report. It runs on the same agentic engine as Claude Code, with no terminal. It comes with every paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), not Free. Since September 16, 2026, Anthropic is merging Cowork and chat into "one Claude" on Pro and Max. Below: what it does, setup, limits, cost, how it differs from Claude Code and chat, and 10 business tasks step by step. Every fact here was checked on Anthropic's pages on 2026-10-22.

Most founders meet Claude as a chat box. You ask, it answers, you copy the answer somewhere else and do the rest of the work yourself.
Cowork is the version that does the rest of the work. You point it at a folder of receipts and come back to an expense report. You ask for last week's numbers and come back to a five-slide deck. That shift, from answers to finished work, is why "what is Claude Cowork" gets 12,100 searches a month in the US.
At Pareto Talent we run Claude on a 12-seat Team plan. Cowork is one of the tools our few power users lean on every day, and I'll share what that has cost us below. Everything else in this guide comes from Anthropic's own pages, opened today, with links.
01 · The Definition
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is a mode of the Claude app that completes multi-step tasks for you instead of answering one prompt at a time. Anthropic says it "brings Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding." You describe an outcome, step away, and come back to formatted documents, organized files or synthesized research.
When you start a task, Anthropic's Help Center says Claude does five things: it analyzes your request and makes a plan, breaks complex work into subtasks, runs code and commands in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers, coordinates several workstreams in parallel when that helps, and delivers finished outputs you can preview and download.
You watch it happen. Progress indicators show each step, and you can jump in to redirect it. Claude asks your permission before it permanently deletes any file.
Anthropic's Academy puts the difference from chat simply. Chat is a conversation you steer turn by turn. Cowork is a delegation: "you describe the goal, Claude works across your files and tools, and you come back to a finished result."
What changed in September and October 2026
Two changes matter if you read older tutorials:
- Cowork and chat are merging. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that "Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude." It's rolling out to Pro and Max first. If your message box no longer shows "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you have the new version: you just describe the task in any conversation. Team and Free plans "will follow soon," and Enterprise admins turn it on as a beta.
- Cowork moved to the cloud. From October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run on Anthropic's servers. The setting to run only on your computer was removed. Your folders stay on your computer, and Claude reaches only the ones you've connected, through the desktop app, while it's open. On Team, cloud sessions are in beta and on by default. On Enterprise, they're off by default.
So "Cowork" is becoming less a separate place and more a way of working inside Claude. The skills you need are the same either way: knowing what to hand over, and setting it up so it runs.
02 · Who Gets It
Which Claude plans include Cowork?
Cowork is available on every paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It isn't on the Free plan. The desktop app for macOS and Windows has it on all paid plans. The web and mobile apps have it on Pro, Max and Team, and on Enterprise where an admin has enabled it.
| Surface | Pro | Max | Team | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Desktop (macOS, Windows) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Web (claude.ai) | Yes | Yes | Yes (beta) | If admin enables |
| Mobile (iOS, Android) | Yes | Yes | Yes (beta) | If admin enables |
| Claude in Chrome side panel | Rolling out | Yes | Yes | If admin enables |
| Runs in the cloud | Yes, since Oct 6 | Yes, since Oct 6 | Beta, on by default | Beta, off by default |
Source: Claude Help Center, Get started with Claude Cowork, Use Claude Cowork on web, desktop, and mobile and Use Claude Cowork on Team and Enterprise plans, opened 2026-10-22.
On Team and Enterprise, Cowork is on by default, and an owner can switch it off for the whole organization under Organization settings > Cowork. In organizations that have enabled HIPAA, it's off by default.
03 · For a Business
What can Claude Cowork do for a business?
Claude Cowork does the multi-step desk work that eats a team's week: sorting and renaming files, turning receipts into expense reports, building spreadsheets with working formulas, turning notes into decks, synthesizing research, and producing recurring reports on a schedule. It works across your folders, your browser and the apps you connect.
Anthropic groups its own examples into four buckets:
- File and document management. Sort a messy folder by type and date, rename files to one pattern, turn a folder of receipts into a formatted expense report.
- Research and analysis. Combine web searches, articles and notes into one report. Pull themes, key points and action items out of meeting transcripts.
- Document creation. Excel files "with working VLOOKUP, conditional formatting, and multiple tabs," slide decks from rough notes, polished documents from voice memos.
- Data and analysis. Outlier detection, cross-tabs, time-series work, charts, and cleaning messy datasets.
Four capabilities make that work for a business rather than a hobbyist:
- Connectors. Claude can use the tools you already run, such as Google Drive, Slack or Microsoft 365, so the inputs don't have to be uploaded by hand.
- Scheduled tasks. Describe a task once and it runs hourly, daily, weekly, on weekdays or on demand. These run in the cloud, so your computer can be asleep.
- Projects. Group related tasks into a workspace with its own files, instructions and memory, so the weekly report always starts from the same context.
- Plugins. A plugin bundles skills, connectors and sub-agents into one install. Anthropic lists plugins for legal, finance and brand voice. A plugin you add also works in chat and Claude Code.
Anthropic also sells a ready-made bundle of small-business workflows that runs in Cowork. I covered it in Claude for business.
04 · Which Tool
Claude Cowork vs Claude Code vs the Claude app: which should you use?
Use chat for a quick question or a thinking partner. Use Cowork when there's a clear deliverable that touches your files or tools, like a report, a spreadsheet or research across several sources. Use Claude Code when the output is software: a fix, a feature, a script or an internal tool in a codebase.
| Chat | Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your goal | Still working it out | A clear deliverable | Working software |
| How you work | A few turns of back and forth | Describe it once, check back | Steer from a terminal, IDE, desktop app, Slack or web |
| What you get | Text you read or copy | A finished file, or an action taken | Code changes, tests, scripts, tools |
| Where it runs | Claude app | Anthropic's cloud, reaching your computer through the desktop app | Your computer (desktop app or terminal), or the web |
| Who it's for | Everyone | Founders, ops, finance, sales, marketing | Developers, and operators who build |
| Plans | Free and paid | Paid only | Paid only |
Sources: Claude Academy, Choosing between Claude Cowork or Chat; Claude Code product page; Claude pricing. Opened 2026-10-22. The "who it's for" row is my own judgement.
Is Cowork just Claude Code with a nicer screen? Under the hood, partly. Anthropic says Cowork uses "the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required." The difference is what it's aimed at. Claude Code works in a codebase. Cowork works in your folders, your browser, your desktop apps and your connected tools, and it produces business files.
Can they work together? Yes. If you want a Cowork task to run only on your own computer, Anthropic's instruction is to use Claude Code in the desktop app. You download the task data from Cowork, open the folder in Claude Code and run /port-task-data. Plugins carry across all three.
In our company the split is simple. Most of the team lives in chat and Cowork. The people who build our internal tools live in Claude Code. If you're weighing that second job, our guide to hiring a Claude Code developer covers where it starts.
05 · Setup
How do you set up Claude Cowork?
To set up Claude Cowork, get a paid Claude plan, install the Claude Desktop app, start a task by selecting "Cowork" in the message box (or by just describing the task, if you have the new merged Claude), then connect the folders and apps it should use and choose how often it asks your permission.
Step by step:
- Get a paid plan. Pro is enough to try it alone. For a team, see the plan guide in Claude for business.
- Install Claude Desktop for macOS or Windows from claude.com/download. Desktop is the full experience, because local files, your browser and computer use all go through it.
- Start a task. In the message box, select "Cowork," then describe the outcome you want. If you don't see "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you have the merged version, so skip this and describe the task in any conversation.
- Connect a folder. Give Claude only the folder the task needs. It can only read and write in folders you've connected.
- Add connectors. Use the "+" menu in the message box or Customize > Connectors to give it Drive, Slack, your CRM or other tools.
- Write standing instructions. In Settings > Cowork, edit Global instructions with your tone, formats and role. In the merged version they live under Settings > General. Folder instructions add context per folder.
- Pick a permission mode. Manual asks before each action. Auto lets Claude keep going while it screens each action for safety. Skip asks nothing. Start on Manual.
- Schedule what repeats. Type
/schedulein a task, or click "Scheduled" in the sidebar, and set the cadence.
For Team and Enterprise owners, three switches sit in Organization settings > Cowork: whether Cowork is on at all, whether sessions can run in the cloud, and whether members may use Auto mode. A fourth setting, off by default, decides whether members can "always allow" write-capable connector tools.

06 · Cost
How much does Claude Cowork cost?
Claude Cowork has no separate price. It's included in every paid Claude plan: Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max from $100 a month, Team at $25 a seat ($20 billed annually) and Enterprise at $20 a seat billed annually plus usage at API rates. The real cost is usage: multi-step tasks burn through your limit faster than chat.
| Plan | Price (checked 2026-10-22) | Cowork |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not included |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | Included |
| Max 5x / Max 20x | $100 / $200 a month | Included, with 5x or 20x Pro's usage |
| Team, standard seat | $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed annually | Included |
| Team, premium seat | $125 a seat a month, or $100 billed annually | Included, 5x a standard seat's usage |
| Enterprise | $20 a seat a month billed annually, plus usage at API rates, 20-seat minimum | Included, admin-controlled |
Sources: Claude pricing and the Claude Code product page (Max 20x at $200), opened 2026-10-22. US prices, before tax.
Why can Cowork feel expensive? Anthropic is direct about it: each step Claude takes uses tokens, so a task that runs code, creates files or uses your apps uses more than a quick question. Auto mode costs more again, because Claude checks every action for safety. Its advice: group related work into one task, start a fresh conversation for unrelated work, and say when you only need a quick answer.
Here's what that looks like on a real bill. These are Pareto Talent's own numbers from October 2026, not a benchmark:
- Seats are the small line. Our 12-seat Team plan's seat invoice was $540 in September and $648 in October.
- A few power users drive the rest. In September, extra usage on top of the seats came to about $921. From October 16 to 22, three heavy users (Claude Code, Cowork, agents) spent $292, $243 and $155 beyond their plans, one light user spent $22, and the other 8 seats spent nothing extra.
- Set caps. Two of those three heavy users have a $300 monthly cap set by our admin.
- Check your credits. Our Team plan includes $480 a month of API credits, but only once an API organization is linked. We hadn't linked one, so that money went unused. Check yours.
All in, seats plus extra usage come to roughly $1,500 to $1,800 a month for us. For the full plan-by-plan breakdown, see Claude pricing.
07 · The Limits
What are the limits of Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork can't share sessions with teammates, needs the desktop app open to reach your local files and browser, uses your usage limit fast, and takes real actions that carry real risk. Anthropic warns it has "unique risks due to its agentic nature and internet access," mainly prompt injection from content it reads.
- No session sharing. You can share the files a task makes, but not the session itself.
- The desktop app must be open for local work. A cloud session keeps running if you close the app, but it can't reach your local files, local connectors or browser until the app is back.
- Prompt injection. If Claude reads content from outside your trust boundary, such as an inbound email, that content can try to hijack it. Anthropic's example is an email saying "transfer $1000 to this account."
- Sensitive data. Anthropic advises against giving it folders with financial documents, and "strongly" advises against using its browser for actions involving sensitive information.
- Computer use bypasses the usual checks. When Claude drives your screen directly, the permission prompts that gate other tools don't apply.
- Data leaves your machine. In cloud sessions, the work, including any local file Claude opens, is processed on Anthropic's servers.
None of this makes Cowork a bad tool. It makes it a tool someone has to own: deciding which folders it sees, which connectors can write, and which tasks stay on Manual.
Where Cowork stops and a builder starts
Cowork does the task you give it, well, inside the access you grant. It doesn't decide which of your 40 weekly tasks are worth automating. It doesn't build the internal tool your team needs when a spreadsheet stops being enough. And it doesn't notice that last Monday's scheduled report quietly failed because a connector lost its login. That's ownership work, and it's the gap I see in most companies that "have Claude."
08 · The Playbook
10 business tasks you can hand Claude Cowork, step by step
These are the jobs I'd hand Cowork first in a small company. Each one is built from a use case Anthropic documents, written up as the steps you'd follow. Start each on Manual approval, check the first three runs by hand, then decide what to schedule.
1. Turn a folder of receipts into an expense report
- Make a folder called
Receipts/2026-10and drop every receipt in, photos and PDFs. - Connect that folder to a Cowork task.
- Ask: "Read every receipt in this folder. Build an Excel expense report with date, vendor, category, amount and currency, one tab per category, and a summary tab with totals. List any receipt you couldn't read."
- Check the "couldn't read" list and five random rows against the originals.
2. Clean up and rename a shared folder
- Pick one messy folder, such as a downloads or contracts folder. Copy it first.
- Ask: "Organize this folder by type and date. Rename every file to YYYY-MM-DD-client-description. Don't delete anything. Give me a table of old name, new name and new location."
- Claude asks your permission before any permanent deletion, so keep the instruction explicit anyway.
3. A Monday KPI deck that builds itself
- Connect the tools where your numbers live (for example Google Drive and your analytics tool).
- Ask, in the style Anthropic uses: "Every Monday morning, build last week's readout. Pull signups, leads and revenue from [sources]. Compare to the week before. Flag anything that moved more than 10%. Note anything you couldn't pull. Save to Reports/Weekly."
- Review the first run, fix the instructions, then type
/scheduleand set it to weekly.
4. A daily briefing from Slack, email and your calendar
- Connect Slack, email and calendar.
- Ask: "Every weekday at 7:30, summarize the last 24 hours: decisions made, questions waiting on me, and today's meetings with one line of context each."
- Keep this one read-only. It needs no write access at all.
5. Research an account before a sales call
- Create a project called "Sales prep" with your offer, your ideal customer and a sample brief.
- Ask: "Research [company] before my call: what they sell, size, recent news, who I'm meeting and their background, and three questions worth asking. One page."
- Anthropic says its own sales team uses Cowork to research accounts before the first call.
6. Find the objections that keep coming up
- Put a quarter of call notes or transcripts in one folder.
- Ask: "Read every call. Write a memo on where each open deal stands, what the customer said is blocking it, and which objections repeat. Quote each one from the note it came from."
- The quotes are the point: they let you check Claude against the source.
7. First-pass contract review against your playbook
- Put inbound agreements and your contract playbook in one folder.
- Ask: "For each contract, write a memo listing every departure from the playbook, cited to the clause, and flag anything the playbook doesn't cover."
- This is a first pass for your review or your lawyer's, not legal advice.
8. Month-end reconciliation in a spreadsheet
- Drop the month's exports (bank, payment processor, invoices) and your budget file in one folder.
- Ask: "Reconcile these into one working spreadsheet. Flag variances over $100 and write a note on anything that didn't reconcile."
- Keep finance folders separate from everything else, per Anthropic's advice on sensitive files.
9. Meeting transcript to action items and draft follow-ups
- Connect the folder or tool where your call recordings land.
- Ask: "From this transcript, list decisions, action items with owners and due dates, and draft a follow-up email for each external attendee. Don't send anything."
- Sending email "as you" is exactly where Anthropic says to stay on Manual approval.
10. Rough notes to a finished deck
- Give it your notes, a voice memo transcript or last month's report.
- Ask: "Turn this into a 6-slide deck for [audience]: the problem, what we did, results, what's next, one ask. Keep it plain."
- Cowork produces PowerPoint files you can keep editing.

09 · Ownership
Who should own Claude Cowork in your company?
One person should own Claude Cowork in your company: someone who picks which tasks to hand over, writes the instructions, projects and skills once, controls which folders and connectors it can touch, and checks every week that scheduled tasks still run. In a small company that's usually an operator, not the founder.
Here's the pattern I see. A founder buys seats, three people use them well, and the rest open chat twice a month. Nobody wrote the shared instructions. Nobody set the caps. The Monday report breaks and nobody notices for three weeks.
Cowork is the tool. An AI Operator is who sets it up for your whole team. Every Pareto AI Operator finishes 40+ hours of training and a 5-day final project, a full funnel built with AI and scored on a 25-point rubric, plus an interview. They're trained on Claude, ChatGPT, Zapier, n8n, Slack and more. They start with an AI Activation Call, where we map how your business runs and decide where AI goes first, then build and run it, and report every Friday on what shipped.
The price is $3,600/month, month to month, plus a one-time $3,000 placement fee. It's paid once, on your call, and comes back in full if none of your 3 profiles fit. If you'd rather compare the options first, see what an AI operator costs.
Pick before you pay: Meet 3 certified AI Operators within 24 hours of your call and choose yours. Your subscription starts only when you pick. The $3,000 placement fee, paid on your call, comes back in full if none of the 3 fit.
The Replacement Guarantee: If your operator can't build what you need, or ever stops being the right fit, we replace them fast, with a full handover, for as long as you're with us.
